The Basics of Making Cake Pops

Step 1: Bake Your Cake

Bake your cake per the instructions if you're making it from the box! I love pairing the Duncan Hine's Devil's Food cake with their cream cheese frosting. It comes out perfectly moist and the sweetness isn't overpowering like when I do it with white cake and a buttercream. One cake makes roughly 28 to 36 cake pops, depending on scoop size.

Tip

Line your cake pan with foil and spray it down with some baking spray. This makes clean up easier and you don't have to soak/wash your pan, which leaves more time for detailing these babies!

Step 2: Crumble & Add Frosting

After the cake cools completely, cut it up and crumble the entire cake into a large bowl.

Now mix in your frosting! Depending on the type of cake you are using, frosting amounts will vary, but always start with a little and gradually add more. If you put too much frosting, the cake will be too soggy to roll into balls.

Step 3: Scoop & Chill

After you combine the cake crumbs and frosting, use a cookie scoop or large spoon to scoop and roll the mixture into balls, then chill.

Step 4: Dip & Stick

Once the cake balls chill for a bit in the fridge, melt down some chocolate melts and grab your treat sticks.

Dip one tip of each stick into the melted chocolate, then insert them into the cake balls.

Tip

Do not use plain white chocolate–it will not chill properly! Be sure to pick up chocolate melts to get the right shell.

Step 3: Add Helmet Details

Grab a ziplock bag and add melted black chocolate. Snip the tip to DIY a frosting bag!

With that, pipe a straight line around the upper portion of the cake pop. Then pipe two triangles for eyes and an upside down (wide) V for the nose of the mask. Add two dots on the bottom. Next, pipe two triangles for eyes and an upside down (wide) V for the nose of the mask. Add two dots on the bottom near the chin.

Dip a toothpick into the black melted chocolate to add four small lines at the bottom of the left and right sides for the ventilation of the mask. Your Stormtrooper cake pops are ready serve!

Lightsaber Cake Pops

Step 1: Shape Cake Balls

Mold the cake balls into long, thin lightsaber shapes.

Tip

I made mine thicker to make the cake pop worth the bite and to avoid using fondant since I am not the biggest fan. The skinnier you make them – the harder it will be to dip them without breaking.

Step 2: Dip into Melted Chocolate

Dip the top 2/3 of the pops in red or blue melted chocolate. Then leave them to chill to prevent colors from running. After that, cover the bottom 1/3 of the pops in black melted chocolate to create the lightsaber handles.

Tip

I used a spoon to guide the black in a straight line to form the top of the lightsaber.

Step 3: Pipe Details

Put some melted black chocolate into a ziplock bag and snip the tip for a DIY frosting bag, as mentioned above. Then pipe a straight line around the edge of the handle and two dots. Your lightsaber cake pops are done!
