Camping trips are an essential part of summer for many families. They’re fun, adventurous and allow you to enjoy the outdoors and get acquainted with nature. Food is always a big topic when it comes to camping. You won’t have a full kitchen at your disposal, so it’s crucial to be prepared. And if your family is vegan, it’s even more important that you meal prep and pack the right foods for the whole clan. Take a look at our favourite vegan camping meals and our best tips for creating meals the whole family will love!
4 Tips for Creating Easy Vegan Camping Meals
1. Pack Non-Perishable Items
Non-perishable items are ideal for camping as they’re easy to pack and require minimal cooking. Vegan non-perishable foods include canned vegetables and beans, canned soup, healthy crackers, dried chickpeas, nut butters, organic nuts, plant or nut milk, and rice. Some of these items you can eat without cooking, and some you’ll need to heat over your fire or camping stove.
2. Meal Prep in Advance
You don’t have to prepare all your camping meals ahead of time, but prepping some snacks and easy meals in advance will make camping that much more enjoyable. Think foods like muffins, pasta salads, granola bars, energy balls and noodle dishes. Meal prep will allow you to enjoy more of your time camping and not have you worrying about what you’ll make for every meal.
3. Pack Cooking/Eating Essentials
Make sure to pack all your cooking and dining utensils. A can opener, spatula, ladle and tongs are a must, as is a pot, pan and mixing bowl. Pack a ton of forks, spoons and knives, and don’t forget food storage containers to pack up leftovers. A cutting board will come in handy, as will lots of tin foil. And of course you’ll need a large cooler bag to place in all your food that needs refrigeration.
4. Get Acquainted With Foil Packs
Foil packet cooking is a go-to for many campers, as it’s a super easy way to cook and eat meals while you’re at the campsite. Foil packet meals are really simple to make – you simply place all of the ingredients you’re using in aluminum foil and place it over a campfire or on a grill to cook. Think: vegan sausage and vegetables, taco-spiced black bean and corn, and herbed mushrooms and rice. As the food cooks in the foil pack, all the juices combine and result in a scrumptious meal. You can also make foil pack meals ahead of time, so they’re ready to go when you need them!
